About the event
For June we have a mix of reading and viewing based on gender inequality in the workplace. We will read "The No Club: Putting an End to Women's Dead End Work" by Linda Babcock, Brenda Peyser, Lise Versterlund and Laurie R. Weingart. The title essentially refers to saying no to "non-promotable work". This is the type of work which women often get saddled with, leading to adverse career outcomes, given that it takes time away from work that counts for career success. An interview by one of the authors, Laurie Weingart, can be accessed here. A ted talk by Soumaya Keynes is of interest, titled Why There Are So Few Women in Economics. We will also read a short (two page) article by Thomas Piketty titled "Gender Pay Inequality: 19% or 64%" from his book Time for Socialism.
